What is financial advice?

Financial advice is simply getting a better understanding of how you can manage your money.

There are two types of financial advice, general advice and personal advice. General advice can provide a general overview on financial information such as superannuation (super), insurance, managed funds and shares. Personal advice requires an in depth analysis of your financial situation and will depend on your individual needs. Typically, personal advice has associated costs because it requires more time for the financial adviser to create a customised financial plan.

IOOF has access to professional financial advisers across Australia who can help you start planning your financial future. What should I expect when seeking financial advice?

Step 1: You have decided to speak with a financial adviser

Everyone has individual circumstances and requires different levels of financial advice. Your enquiry may be resolved almost straight away with general advice over the phone.

If your circumstances are a little more complicated or if you require detailed financial advice, you might need to arrange an appointment with a financial adviser. Prior to attending your appointment, you may be asked to provide personal and financial information. This information helps the financial adviser deliver a professional outcome and ensures you receive value from your appointment.

Step 2: The Financial Plan

Your adviser will recommend a strategy that best meets your needs. Based on the strategy, your adviser will develop a financial plan according to the information you provided during your consultation.

Step 3: Implementation

Once your financial plan has been finalised, your adviser will go through each element of it and carefully explain what impact this may have on you.

Then, it's time for you to implement any changes required and work towards reaching your goals.

Do I need to see my adviser regularly?

This may depend on your personal situation. For example, you may get married, divorced, have a baby or your salary may increase or even decrease, then you may need to speak to your adviser. Your financial adviser is available to assist you and answer any questions or concerns that you may have regarding changes in investment markets, your personal financial situation and your risk profile.

To ensure your financial goals are being met, your financial adviser may also recommend that an annual or regular review of your super and investments is required.

Are there any fees?

IOOF offers a half hour initial consultation free of charge. If you proceed with personal advice, you may be required to pay adviser fees upfront. Alternatively, any ongoing fees and commission-based fees will be agreed upon between you and your adviser.
